By
the time you read this, we’ll all be “fitter” missionaries after
our day of Body-Building with Friends of the Groom at Beyond
Telepathy.
Unfortunately,
the next major diocesan event that had been scheduled is not
going to happen: Archbishop Desmond Tutu has had to cancel
his visit to our diocese, due to health concerns.
However, other activities in the coming months are still as
scheduled:

Understanding
Your Teenager—St. Thomas, Miami, is hosting a
seminar for parents—and anyone else who would like to have better
relationships with the teenagers in their lives—on Sunday, Apr.
6, from 1-4 p.m. The speaker is Wayne Rice, co-founder of Youth
Specialties, and author of books and materials for parents,
teens and youth workers. Cost for the seminar is $8 per person
or $12 for couples. For information, contact Phebe Hisbhman,
youth ministry coordinator at St. Thomas, 305-661-3436, or email
phebe@stepsmia.org. Pre-registration is necessary in order to
insure that seminar materials (a 50-page book) will be available
for every participant.
Holy
Week Clergy Day/Blessing of the Oils—The annual Holy Week
Clergy Day and Blessing of the Oils will be Tuesday, Apr. 15,
beginning at 10 a.m., at Trinity Cathedral. The guest speaker
will be the Very Rev. Titus L. Presler, dean and president of
the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in Austin,
Tex., and chair of the Standing Commission on World Mission.
Good
Friday Offering—Please remember that the Good Friday offering
in all Episcopal congregations is to be designated, as it has
been for the past 61 years, for the Province of Jerusalem and
the Middle East. (This is not to be confused with the Jerusalem
2000 appeal, which was designed to support specific institutions
and projects within the Diocese of Jerusalem.) A bulletin shell
and a poster, as well as other information on the Good Friday
Offering, are available at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/agr/friday.html.
If your parish does not take an offering on Good Friday, you
are asked to designate the offering from another service during
Holy Week for this purpose.
Clergy
Conference—The Spring Clergy Conference will begin at 5
p.m. on May 6 and end after lunch on May 8. The speaker will
be the Rev. David Schlafer, a professor of homiletics and an
author of books on preaching. Conference registration will be
available on the diocesan website, at www.diosef.org/register.
Women’s
Retreat—This year, Holy Sacrament, Pembroke Pines,
is opening its Women’s Retreat to all women of the diocese.
The retreat is May 2-4 at the Lake Placid Conference Center
and Resort, site of the Diocesan Men’s Retreat. Speakers include
the Rev. Denise Hudspeth, vicar of St. John’s, Belle Glade and
Holy Nativity, Pahokee, Susan Beebe of Crossridge Church and
Rose Williams of Holy Sacrament. Cost is $85. For more information,
call the church office at 954-432-8686, and ask for the Women’s
Retreat Coordinators.
Latino
Youth Event--The Office of Hispanic Ministry
of the Episcopal Church is sponsoring Breaking Down Walls, an
event for Latino youth ages 14-18, June 25-29 at Berea College,
Lexington, Ky. Each person, youth or adult chaperone, is asked
to contribute a $50 registration fee and the cost of the transportation;
the National Office will pay for lodging and food for all the
participants. The deadline for submitting an application, with
registration fee, is May 15.
Application forms can be downloaded here (English, Spanish).
For further information, please contact the Rev. Ramon I. Aymerich
at Episcopales@aol.com.
Coverage
K Workshops--St. Joseph's, Boynton Beach, will
host a Coverage K workshop on May 31; Adult Misconduct Prevention
will be offered in the morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m., and
Child Protection in the afternoon, beginning at 1:30 p.m. No
lunch will be provided, and there is no cost for either workshop.
Pre-registration is required by May 20; register online at www.diosef.org/register.
Graduating
Seminarians—Our diocese has 10 seminarians who will
graduate this spring! Archdeacon Paul Rasmus, our diocesan
deployment officer, has asked rectors to contact him (561-656-0868
or paul@diosef.org)
if they are looking for an assistant and would be interested
in talking with any of these persons. We’re all asked to keep
them in our prayers as they complete their studies and seek
a call to begin their ordained ministry. Here are their names
and their seminaries: Gail Abbott (General); Virginia Brewer
(Sewanee); Thomas Bruttell (Berkeley at Yale); Thomas Dwyer
(Berkeley at Yale); Darrell Laremore (Seminary of the Southwest);
Scot McComas (General); Christopher Schuller (Episcopal Divinity
School); Terrence Taylor (Berkeley at Yale); Regina Walsh-Minor
(General); and Bruce Woodcock (General).
Youth
at General Convention—Youth ages 14-18 are invited to participate
in a youth gathering, “Count Me Faithful”, at General Convention
in Minneapolis, Minn., July 30-Aug.3. For more information,
go to: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/myp/countfaithful/index.htm,
or contact Diocesan Youth Missioner Fr. Reggie Payne-Wiens at
the Diocesan Office, 1-800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, or by email,
reggie@diosef.org.
Florida
Day at the National Cathedral—It’s time to begin
making plans to participate in the quadrennial Florida Day at
Washington National Cathedral, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003. The weekend
will include a retreat on Friday, Sept. 19; tours of Cathedral
and grounds on Saturday, Sept. 20; Holy Eucharist at 11 a.m.
Sunday, with clergy and acolytes in procession, and reception
following; evensong at 4 p.m. Sunday; Healing Service at 6:30
p.m. We would like all congregations in the diocese to be represented;
begin by contacting Joanna
Wragg or Gail
McShane at the Diocesan Office with the name of a
volunteer coordinator from your parish for this event. For more
information on Washington National Cathedral, go to www.nationalcathedral.org.
Episcopal
Relief & Development—Episcopal Relief and Development
(formerly the Presiding Bishop’s Fund for World Relief) has
asked that we develop a network of people who can bring news
of its work regularly to all congregations. Each rector or priest/deacon-in-charge
of a parish is asked to appoint a representative who can assist
in talking to the congregation monthly and encouraging donations
to ER & D. This network of representatives would also be
in place to help coordinate our response in times of emergencies.
Please send names, phone numbers and email addresses
to diocesan ER & D coordinator Deacon Vivian Hopkins at
Christ Episcopal Church, 305-442-8542 or email chrepch.aol.com.
Donations to Episcopal Relief & Development may be sent
to Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101. For a bulletin insert on specific
ER & D responses to the conflict in Iraq, go to: http://www.er-d.org/iraq.htm.
"Jesus
for Every Generation"--The Duncan Center will present a
seminar June 9-11 led by Rev. Carl Eeman, author of Generations
of Faith, on ministry with different generations. Cost is $250
for the conference and $175 for lodging and meals ($90 for commuter).
Register by May 19 at duncanregister@earthlink.net
or by fax at 561-496-1726. For more information or to request
