If you missed the Bishop’s Spring Conference, you missed two days of high-energy, enjoyable, provocative multi-sensory presentations—but you haven’t missed “The E-Church”. Tex Sample has promised us a bibliography and a list of websites that will provide more information on how the electronic culture is changing the way we experience the world, and give us tools for “taking electronic culture and putting it in God’s story”. We’ll post this information as soon as we receive it.

Help for Haiti—Bishop Frade has called for an Easter offering of a dollar per person in every congregation “for the resurrection of Haiti”. The funds will be sent directly to Bishop Duracin to help the Diocese of Haiti meet some of the urgent needs resulting from the political turmoil there. Make checks payable to Diocese of Southeast Florida, marked for “Easter offering for Haiti”, and mail to 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132. Donations may also be made online: Go to www.diosef.org and click on “Donations”. Be sure to indicate that your donation is for Haiti.

“Passion” Banner—Borrowing another great promotional idea from the Diocese of Indianapolis, we’ve had some vinyl banners made that say: “You’ve seen the movie about His passion…Now come hear His good news. The Episcopal Church welcomes you.” The generic banner includes the diocesan toll-free phone number and website address, but several parishes have had banners customized with their own phone number, web address or times of services. If you are interested in having a banner made to display during the Easter season, contact Mary Cox, 800-268-9993, ext. 18, or episcorat@aol.com. The cost is $90.

Diocesan Journal--Copies of the Journal of Convention 2003 are now available and will be distributed to clergy at the Chrism Eucharist on Apr. 6. Journals will be mailed to clergy who cannot attend on Apr.6. Remember that the directory information in the Journal is always available--and current--in the database online. Other sections of the Journal will also be posted on the website.

"Lead Like Jesus" Simulcast--Church of the Ascension, Miami, is now a subscriber to Church Communication Network, which provides simulcast interactive training seminars. All diocesan clergy are invited to the first of these programs to be offered at Ascension, "Lead Like Jesus", on Apr. 29, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The cost for the day is $6, which includes lunch; the broadcast will be in the church and lunch in the parish hall. If you plan to attend, reply directly to Ascension, 305- 238-5151, no later than Monday, Apr. 26. For complete information on the broadcast, go to http://www.ccnonline.net/programming/event/evt_29apr04.htm. For information on future broadcasts, go to http://www.ccn.tv/programming/schedulews04.htm

Clergy Conference—The Spring Clergy Conference will be held at the Duncan Center, May 11-13, beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday and ending with lunch on Thursday. The conference will be led by Bishop Steven Charleston, President and Dean of Episcopal Divinity School (EDS) in Cambridge, Mass. The theme is “Christ’s Mission of Reconciliation: The Heart of Ordained Ministry”. Registration will be online.

Women’s Retreat—Holy Sacrament, Pembroke Pines, is again opening its annual Christian Women’s Retreat, April 30 (evening)-May 2, to all women of the diocese and their friends and neighbors. The retreat will be held at Lake Placid Conference Center in Lake Placid, FL. The Rev. Denise Hudspeth will be the spiritual leader and Susan Carmichael, who spoke at the clergy spouse wellness day last fall, will be the keynote speaker. Cost is $85 (all-inclusive). Registration and 50% deposit are due by March 28. For more information or to register, call the church at 954-432-8686 (daytime) or Tish Burgher 954-430-9611 (after 6 p.m.) or e-mail:holysacrament@holysacrament.org. Click here for a downloadable registration form.

Twelve-Step Retreat—The annual Twelve Step Retreat sponsored by the Task Force on Addiction and Recovery will be held at the Duncan Center, beginning the evening of May 14 and continuing through lunch on May 16.  The cost is $150 for all six meals and two nights' lodging, double occupancy.  For information, contact Archdeacon Paul Rasmus, 561-656-0868 or paul@diosef.org.

COPE Conference—The annual COPE Conference for parish secretaries, administrators and other lay staff is scheduled for May 21-22 at the Duncan Center, beginning with lunch on Friday and ending at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Deacon Mary Beth Wells will lead participants in a spiritual gifts inventory; and there will be workshops on effective use of email and the Internet, and publicizing your parish. Bishop Frade will join the group on Friday afternoon for an informal question and answer period and dinner. There will also be a humorous look (with special guest performers) at horror stories from the church office; yoga; labyrinth walks and time for sharing information and ideas on topics from church software to how to handle “sticky situations”. Watch for a letter with complete information. Click here to register online.

Episcopal Marriage Encounter--An Episcopal Marriage Encounter weekend will be held at the Duncan Center May 21-23. Check-in is after 4 p.m. Friday (dinner is optional, $26 per couple extra); the program starts at 8 p.m. and ends Sunday at 4:30 pm. The registration deadline is April 15; space is limited. There is a non-refundable $45 registration fee when you sign up for an Episcopal Marriage Encounter (E.M.E.) weekend and that is the only fixed cost. You will be given an opportunity to make a free-will confidential donation. Couples will have the opportunity to experience a weekend-regardless of their financial circumstances. Make checks payable to the Duncan Conference Center. For additional information or to register, contact Mary at the Duncan Conference Center @ 561-496-4130 or email duncancenter@adelphia.net.

Missions--The Diocesan World Mission Commission is planning several mission events in the coming months. There will be two immediate opportunities to learn more about mission work before going overseas: a Mission Rally at Chapel of St. Andrew, Boca Raton, on Apr. 25, from 5-7 p.m., which will provide information on upcoming mission trips; and a Mission Retreat, which will take a 24-member team to help parishioners at Holy Comforter, Miami, paint the inside of their church on the weekend of May 23-24. The WMC will also sponsor a nine-day mission for 15 participants to San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, Jul. 17-25. The team will be doing some construction work to complete the new retreat center, as well as providing a Vacation Bible School for neighborhood children. Registration is available on the diocesan website. For more information on mission trips, contact Mission Trip Coordinator Doug Drouin at 561-866-1978 or doug@diosef.org.

Summer Camp—Diocesan Youth Ministry is co-sponsoring with the Diocese of Southwest Florida four summer camp sessions in June at DaySpring, the camp and conference facility of the Diocese of SW Florida in Ellenton, FL. Save these dates: June 6-11, Middle School Camp; June 13-18, Elementary Camp, High School Camp and Extreme High School Camp. The theme for all four sessions is “It’s All God’s Work”. Counselors are needed. For more information contact Diocesan Youth Missioner Fr. Terrence Taylor, 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 28,
ttaylor@diosef.org or Mary Cobiella, ext. 29 or mary@diosef.org. Click here to view and download the camp brochure.

Two more youth opportunities—“Come to the Feast: A Gathering to Renew and Inspire Young Adult Ministry” will be held May 28-31, at the Wyndham Harbour Island Hotel in Tampa, FL. More information and a downloadable brochure are available at www.cometothefeast.org. The Province IV Provincial Youth Event will be held July 20-25, 2003 at Berea College, Berea Kentucky.  Please contact the Youth Missioner, Fr. Terrence Taylor, for more information.

2004 Graduates-- In an effort to expand ministry to young adults, to identify potential young adult leaders and to encourage their involvement in the church, the National Church is developing a database with the names of Episcopal youth who have recently graduated from high school. Youth Missioner Fr. Terrence Taylor is requesting that each parish provide the names of all youth who will graduate from high school this year, so that this information can be submitted to the National Church for this purpose. Click here for a downloadable form for providing this information. Email information to mary@diosef.org, or mail forms to Mary Cobiella, Diocese of Southeast Florida, 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132.

Ordinations—Seven seminarians from our diocese are scheduled to be ordained on Apr. 17:  Christina Encinosa, Venerable Bede, Coral Gables—General Seminary (GTS); Donna Hall, Holy Spirit, West Palm Beach—Seminary of the Southwest; Hyvenson Joseph, St. Nicholas, Pompano Beach—University of the South; Tyler Jones, Trinity Cathedral, Miami—GTS; Kevin Morris, Venerable Bede, Coral Gables—Berkeley at Yale; Corinna (Cori) Olson, St. Paul’s, Delray Beach—GTS; and Deborah Self, St. David’s in the Pines, Wellington—University of the South. Please keep these persons in your prayers as they seek a call to begin their ordained ministries. If you know of a position that might be available for a seminary graduate, contact Archdeacon Paul Rasmus at 561-656-0868 or paul@diosef.org.

Resources on The Passion—Several congregations are planning to take groups to see the film The Passion of the Christ, or have already done so. Some excellent resources for discussion of the film are available from the National Council of Churches, http://www.ncccusa.org/interfaith/passionfilmresources.html
Resources are also offered by the Boston College Center for Christian-Jewish Learning,
http://www.bc.edu/research/cjl/meta-elements/texts/education/PASSION_resources.htm and
http://www.bc.edu/research/cjl/meta-elements/partners/CSG/passion_guide.htm
Click here for a thoughtful reflection on the film by a rabbi.

Verneka Silva—Because of increasingly frail health, Canon Verneka Silva has moved to Minnesota to live with her daughter. If you would like to send her a note or card, her new address is: Mrs. Verneka S. Silva, c/o Mr. & Mrs. Frank Simmons, 11518 Hampshire Curve, Bloomington, MN  55438. The phone number is 952-041-4528.

Registration reminder—Registration deadlines for diocesan events are necessary so that we can have an accurate count for whatever meals, rooms and materials are required. When people show up without registering, it’s not always possible to provide for them—and when people who have registered DON’T show up, we are still charged for the meals and rooms requested and the materials purchased. This is wasteful! There are last-minute emergencies, of course, but you can help us exercise better stewardship of diocesan resources by registering on time for events you plan to attend, and letting us know as early as possible if you are not going to able to attend an event for which you are registered.

A Medical Coverage reminder—Clergy and lay employees with health coverage through the Medical Trust should review very thoroughly the information they received at the time of open enrollment last fall. You’ll need to be prepared for significant increases in deductibles and co-pays when you go to any health care provider or order prescriptions. If you have difficulties with your coverage that cannot be resolved by one or two phone calls to the provider and/or the insurance company, contact the Medical Trust at 1-800-223-6602.

Youth Minister needed--The Church of the Redeemer, a large, traditional Episcopal Church located on the bay in beautiful Sarasota, Florida, seeks a committed Christian who is an energetic, motivated, creative and organized individual with a magnetic personality to lead our youth ministry program. Exceptional salary and benefits for this full time position based on education and experience. For complete details and application, email Michael Hartenstine at mhartenstine@williamsparker.com. Deadline for applications is May 10, 2004.
