Parochial Reports—According to diocesan canons, each congregation is required to submit the annual Parochial Report (due Jan. 31 every year) in order to have seat, voice and vote at the Diocesan Convention. Reports that have not already been submitted must now be filed online through the national website of the Episcopal Church, at http://pr1.dfms.org; every congregation whose report for 2005 has not been received has been notified and given the password to access its report at this site. If you have not received your password, contact diocesan Chief Operating Officer Cris Valdes at 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 31, or by email, cris@diosef.org. Workbooks with complete instructions for completing the Parochial Report can be downloaded at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/research_62344_ENG_HTM.htm

Vision-Mission “business card”—Everyone who attended the Bishop’s Spring Conference found in the packet a “business card” showing the main business of the diocese—our vision and mission. Click here to download the card, available in both Publisher and PDF formats, so you can print as many as you need to hand out to anyone who wants to know what the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Southeast Florida is about.

Holy Week Clergy Day—The annual Holy Week Clergy Day with Chrism Eucharist (Blessing of the Oils) and renewal of ordination vows will be Tuesday, Apr. 11, beginning at 10 a.m. at Trinity Cathedral. The speaker will be the Rev. John L. Kater, acting president and dean, Church Divinity School of the Pacific. In order to have an accurate count for lunch, you will need to register by Apr. 4 at www.diosef.org/register.html .

House of Bishops Pastoral Letter—“The Sin of Racism: A Call to Covenant”, the Pastoral Letter issued by the House of Bishops at its meeting last month, is available online at: http://www.episcopalchurch.org/3577_73047_ENG_HTM.htm

Good Friday Offering—For the past 84 years the Episcopal Church has designated the Good Friday offering for the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem and the Middle East. Current events continue to make the needs of that ministry obvious and urgent. Offering materials, including a poster, a bulletin shell and offering envelopes, can be ordered online at www.episcopalchurch.org/agr/friday.html or by calling 800-903-5544.

Diocesan Youth Ministry—is alive and well! The departure of Diocesan Canon for Youth and Young Adult Ministry Terrence Taylor to accept the call to be rector of St. Christopher’s, West Palm Beach, simply means that more resources will be directed to youth ministries at the deanery level. Current diocesan youth programs and events will continue as planned, with ongoing administrative/secretarial support from Mary Cobiella in the Diocesan Office. Watch for more information from the Youth Commission in the coming months on new plans for ministry with and for the youth of our congregations.

Help for Cuban church—A generous gift from a parishioner at St. Philip’s, Coral Gables, (whose rector, Fr. Eric Kahl, visited Cuba with Bishop Frade in February) will cover the cost of new buildings at La Trinidad Episcopal Church in Bermeja, Matanzas, Cuba, for which Bishop Frade had requested help last month. The bishop is still appealing for donations for the Episcopal Church in Cuba during the seasons of Lent and Easter, but now he intends the funds to go for rebuilding a church in Havana, La Calvaria. This parish’s building completely collapsed, and parishioners currently worship in the living room of the rectory. Donations can be made online at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org; click on “donations” and designate your gift for “Assistance for church in Cuba”.

Earth Stewardship Sunday resources—Liturgical and educational materials for Earth Stewardship Sunday, Apr. 23, can be downloaded from the website of the Eco-Justice Working Group of the National Council of Churches (NCC), http://www.nccecojustice.org/KatrinaDownload.html The group’s theme for this year’s Earth Sunday observance is "Through the Eye of the Hurricane: Rebuilding Just Communities".

"Safeguarding God’s Children"— Three new dates have been set for this training: Apr. 29, 9 a.m. (English) and noon (Spanish) at Todos los Santos, Miami; May 4, 6 p.m., at Trinity Cathedral, Miami (English); and May 13, 9 a.m., (English) at St. Kevin’s, Opa-locka. Registration is online at www.diosef.org/register.html. All clergy officiating in this diocese, either canonically resident or licensed to officiate, should have been certified as having completed this training by Dec. 31, 2005; to accommodate those clergy new to the diocese, this deadline has been extended to July 31, 2006.

Episcopal Life “Super Issues”Episcopal Life, the national newspaper of the Episcopal Church, is offering dioceses and congregations an opportunity to purchase at a reduced price (43 cents per copy) copies of four “super issues”--May, June, July-August and September—with coverage before, during and after General Convention. Click here for an order form. The diocese has arranged for the June issue, which will provide an extensive General Convention preview, to be mailed to everyone on the mailing list for The Net, so this would be a good time to be sure everyone in your parish is currently receiving our diocesan newspaper! (If you would like to help defray the cost of this Episcopal Life mailing, donations would be gratefully accepted; go to www.episcopalsouthflorida.org, click on “donations” and indicate that your donation is for “Episcopal Life mailing”.)

Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Weekend-- An Episcopal Cursillo Leaders Workshop (ECLW) will be held in at the Duncan Center Apr. 21-23. Cursillistas who are interested in participating should contact local coordinator Bob Anderson, rander5256@aol.com or 954-566-3598.

Eucharistic Visitor (LEM) Training—Most dates for Eucharistic Visitor (formerly LEM) Training for the spring semester have been changed, and there are now courses available in several locations, including the South Dade training in Spanish, in April and May. Check the registration forms at http://www.diosef.org/register.html for all the new dates and times.

Grant Application Workshop-The Southeast Florida Episcopal Foundation is offering a Grant Application Workshop for those interested in applying for grants from the diocesan Human Needs budget and/or the Smith Charity Fund. The workshop will be May 2 from 10 a.m. to noon, with lunch included, at St. Mark the Evanglelist, Ft. Lauderdale. For information contact Ellen Stone St. John, estonestjohn@adelphia.net. Applications for this year’s Smith Fund grants are available on the Foundation website at www.episfoundation.org/grant_app.html#3

Multicultural Ministry Training—The Rev. Dr. Eric F.H. Law, consultant and trainer for multicultural ministry development, and Martha Fugate, presenter of the Project YES “Communications Solutions” workshops on conflict resolution, will join Bishop Ottley to present a two-day workshop on Multicultural Ministry for clergy and lay leaders, May 5 and 6 at the Chapel of St. Andrew, Boca Raton. The course, which will be incorporated into the schedule of the ECW Annual Meeting (also May 5-6 at Chapel of St. Andrew), is designed to provide participants with the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to create diversity-capable ministries. The conference fee of $75 includes meals and course materials. Overnight lodging is available for an additional $75 at Doubletree Guest Suites, 701 NW 53 St., Boca Raton, 561-886-3314; the deadline for hotel reservations is Apr. 21. Registration for the conference is online at www.diosef.org/register.html.

Luncheon for Clergywomen—All clergywomen, active or retired, in the diocese, as well as women candidates for Holy Orders, are invited to a luncheon May 24, at noon, at the Duncan Center. The cost is $10. RSVP to the Rev. Nancy McCarthy, revnancy474@adelphia.net, by May 19.

Labyrinth programs with Lauren Artress—The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas, the organization that has reintroduced the labyrinth and walking meditation as spiritual tools, will be in residence at the Duncan Center for a series of labyrinth-related programs May 26-30, 2006. In addition to leading a labyrinth retreat May 26 and 27, Artress will offer a day with clergy, spiritual directors and retreat leaders on May 28 and labyrinth facilitator training May 29-30.

Hurricane relief—There are many ways to help those affected by the 2005 hurricanes, on the Gulf Coast, throughout the Caribbean and Central America and in our own diocese. Donations can be made online by clicking on “donations” at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org, or checks can be made payable to Diocese of Southeast Florida, marked for “hurricane relief” and mailed to 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132. Donations can be made to Episcopal Relief and Development at http://www.er-d.org/ or mailed to: Episcopal Relief and Development, PO Box 12043, Newark, NJ 07101. To donate by phone, please call 1-800-334-7626, ext. 5129. Updates on ways to help can be found by clicking the “Hurricane Response” link on the front page of the website.

Help for Alaska church—On Mar. 12, the historic Church of the Holy Trinity in Juneau, Alaska, burned to the ground. The 110-year-old church was not only a focus of community service, but also served the nearly one million cruise ship passengers who come thought Juneau every summer. The church was insured, but insurance will not cover all the costs of rebuilding, so gifts of money, vessels, vestments books and other church goods would be gratefully received. Donations may be sent to: Holy Trinity Restoration Fund, 411 Gold St., Juneau, AK 99801. For more information, go to www.trinityjuneau.org.

Special Appeal for Liberia—Bishop Ottley is one of ten bishops who have launched an appeal for dioceses and congregations to pledge financial support for the Episcopal Church of Liberia as it seeks to rebuild its congregations and communities shattered by more than two decades of civil war. Click here for more information on how your congregation can participate in this mission outreach partnership with the Church in Liberia.

Paul Edwards cartoons and meditations—“The Rev” cartoons and meditations by Canon Paul Edwards, who led last fall’s clergy conference, are available on our website for viewing and downloading. Go to http://www.diosef.org/therev_cartoons.html to see what “The Rev” has to say for the seasons of Easter and Pentecost, as well as his new “Twenty Reasons Not to Leave the Church”. Canon Edwards has given permission for these to be reprinted in church bulletins and newsletters.

Seminarians—Please continue to keep our seminarians to your prayer list; they need the support of their diocesan family as they prepare for ordained ministry. Currently attending seminary from our diocese are: Judith Alexis (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest (ETSS); Ian Barnes (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), St. Vincent de Paul; Matthew Cowden (Venerable Bede), Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS); Anne Harris (Chapel of St. Andrew), VTS; Scott Jones (St. Margaret’s, Miami Lakes), ETSS; Jeannie Martinez (St. Mary Magdalene, Coral Springs), VTS; Valerie Miller (St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton), Episcopal Divinity School (EDS); Scott Petersen (St. Benedict’s, Plantation), VTS; Wendy Tobias (St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach), VTS; and Rohani Weger (St. Simon’s, Miami), ETSS. Judith Alexis and Matthew Cowden are graduating this spring.

PLSE--The PLSE ("pulse") program is an interdenominational effort with the dual purpose of nurturing young persons who want to explore a possible call to vocational church leadership, and developing a mentoring-guiding-shepherding process that encourages and lifts up those who explore or discern a call. PLSE maintains an interactive website, www.theplse.org, for young persons exploring a call to ministry and the people (including congregations) who support them. Diocesan youth ministry encourages high school and college students to visit the site and sign up online to become part of the conversation. Young persons who enroll in the site earn the title “PLSE Leader”—a good addition to college and job applications.
