Bishop Frade has a new secretary! Sally James, who has been assisting part-time for the past year in the accounting department and with special projects, began in her new position the week of July 19. Sally, a member of St. Stephen’s, Coconut Grove (Miami), comes to us from many years as an executive assistant in the cruise industry. She first worked for the diocese in the early 1970s as the part-time assistant to the diocesan Youth Coordinator.

You are also hearing a new voice at the reception desk. Receptionist Jessy Soria gave birth to her second child, daughter Shayla Nicole, on July 21, and while she is on maternity leave, Olganese Groves will be greeting you when you call or come to the office.

You will also notice that if you call between noon and 1 p.m., when Olganese is at lunch, you’ll hear our recorded message, which will give you the extension numbers for staff members. We believe this will help us to work more effectively, because other staff members now won’t need to interrupt their own tasks to work at the front desk during the receptionist’s lunch hour.

The theme is “Working Together: Sharing our Diversity”. The cost is $20. Registration for this event is only online. The deadline is midnight, Aug. 22. For more information, email Fr. Terrence Taylor, ttaylor@diosef.org, or Mary Cobiella, mary@diosef.org.

Diocesan Convention deadlines--Information about our Diocesan Convention will soon be posted on the website and mailed to rectors and delegates. Please keep in mind these deadlines: Resolutions must be submitted by Aug. 31, and nominations by Sept. 26, to Fr. Bernard Griffith, Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 33006, Miami, FL 33133; reservations for childcare during the Convention Eucharist must be made online by Oct. 1; and reservations must be made at the Hutchinson Island Marriott, 1-800-775-5936, by Sept. 15 to insure the special convention room rate. The cost for exhibit space will be $50 per table; contact Jack Godfrey, jegatrest@aol.com, for information. Convention registration will be available online.

Email caution—In the Diocesan Office we’ve recently been receiving many emails that seem to come from addresses we know (like some of our clergy, lay leaders and parish offices) but are obviously bogus, with messages lines that are vague or inappropriate, or which claim to be “responses” to messages we never sent. There are viruses that are spread by hijacking an address book and sending fake messages from a legitimate address, so remember to be very careful about opening email—and especially attached files--even from a familiar address, with a message line that seems odd or refers to a message you didn’t send. Also make sure that you have anti-virus software running and that it’s up to date.

Diocesan School—The Fall Semester of the Diocesan School for Christian Studies begins Sept. 11 at St. Mark the Evangelist, Ft. Lauderdale. Lay Eucharistic Minister (now called Eucharistic Visitor) training for both new license and renewal will be offered in four different locations at different times; the first Eucharistic Visitor course, taught in Spanish at Todos los Santos, Miami, begins Aug. 16. Click on Diocesan School on the diocesan website for complete information and registration for both the Diocesan School and the Eucharistic Visitor training.

“Safeguarding God’s Children”—The new training program from Church Pension Fund on prevention of child sexual abuse will be offered on Sept. 7, from 1-4 p.m., at the Duncan Center, just before the Clergy Conference begins. Registration is necessary and is available on the diocesan website; the deadline is Aug. 30. This training is going to be required for clergy. By Dec. 31, 2005, all clergy, both canonically resident and non-canonically resident, must be certified as having completed the full three-hour training in order to continue officiating in this diocese. Workshops are also being offered at St. Thomas School, Coral Gables, on Aug. 19, 1-4 p.m, (for church day school teachers--call the school office at 305-665-4851); Aug. 21, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m., at both St. Luke's, Port Salerno (contact the Rev. Carol Barron, 772-286-5455) and Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach (contact Reed Sprague, 561-655-4554); at All Saints, Ft. Lauderdale, Aug. 29, 2-5 p.m. (contact Rosa Lindahl, 954-467-6496); and Aug. 28, 9 a.m.-noon at St. James the Fisherman, Islamorada, (for Sunday School teachers and adults who work with youth-volunteers from other parishes welcome, no reservation required) and Holy Sacrament, Pembroke Pines (class held in the parish hall, no reservation required).

Clergy Conference—The Fall Clergy Conference will be held Sept. 7-9 at the Duncan Center, beginning with a social hour at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7 (check-in is any time after 2 p.m.) and ending after lunch on Thursday, Sept. 9. The speaker will be Fr. Paul Edwards, rector emeritus of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Fullerton, Calif., and author of The Spiritual Intelligence Handbook. Registration is on the diocesan website; the registration deadline is Aug. 30.

Deacons’ Retreat—Diocesan deacons’ annual overnight retreat with Bishop Frade is scheduled for Sept. 3-4 at the Duncan Center, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and going through mid-afternoon on Saturday. Novelist Joan Medlicott will be the keynote speaker. Medlicott's characters reflect the many types of single lives that make up the American culture today.  The author will be joined by plenary and workshop presenters who will speak to the conference theme "Walking on the Edge: The Adventure of the Solo Flight." For further information, contact kcollierm@diolex.org or davidwperk@aol.com, or go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/soloflightepis

Retired clergy stories — Knowing that clergy never really retire from ministry, The Net is looking for stories about what our clergy “alumni” are doing after leaving fulltime parish work. If you have a story to tell, or know of someone who does, please email episcorat@aol.com or call Mary Cox, 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 18.
