January means it’s time for Parochial Reports and Key Personnel forms to be submitted. These are being mailed to you, as always; but this year for the first time, you will be able to complete and submit both of these forms online, which should be simpler both for you and for Diocesan Staff. Watch for the forms online sometime during the week of January 5.

The ‘E’ Church is coming! Save the dates—Mar. 26-27, 2004—for the Bishop’s Spring Conference, which will feature Exciting, Energizing, Educational--and undoubtedly Electronic--presentations by author and consultant Tex Sample and the Rev. Charles Fulton, director of Congregational Development for the Episcopal Church and president of the Church Building Fund. Watch for details on the website and in your email and “snail-mail”.

Youth Events—The Diocesan Youth Commission has announced several events for early in 2004: Youth Leadership Retreat, for grades 9-12, Jan. 10, 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Chapel of the Venerable Bede on the University of Miami campus in Coral Gables--the cost is $5, which includes lunch; Youth Ministers’ Retreat, including training for the Journey to Adulthood program, Feb. 6-7 at the Hampton Inn, Ft. Lauderdale; and Carnavale with the Bishop, for grades 9-12, Feb. 21 at St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton—Mardi Gras costumes or semiformal dress--$12 pre-registered or $15 at the event. For more information on youth events, contact Diocesan Youth Missioner Fr. Terrence Taylor, 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 28, or ttaylor@diosef.org, or Mary Cobiella, ext. 29, or mary@diosef.org. Registration for the Youth Leadership Retreat is available on the diocesan website.

Database—Many of you have registered online, received your password and are beginning to use our diocesan database. If you haven’t tried it yet, we’ve simplified the process, eliminating one step. On the Home Page of the diocesan website, click on the word: “LOGIN”, located on the left hand side of the page beneath the words: “DIOCESAN CALENDAR”—or go directly to: http://diosef.org/modlogin.php. Click on "to get a password", and fill out the form. After you click "submit information", you will immediately receive an email with a password and further instructions. Go back to the Login page and enter your username and the password provided in the email. When you have logged on, you will have an opportunity to change your password to something more memorable for you. Click on “tutorial” for instructions on how to register and to use the database. Persons listed in the database will be able to correct their own information online and have the changes made automatically when the database is updated, usually once a week. Try it out for a while—and then let us know (there’s a link for “suggestions”) how the database is working for you, and how we might make it an even more useful tool for keeping us all in touch with one another.

“What in the world…” shirts—We’ve had inquiries about purchasing shirts like the ones presented to the persons honored at the Bishop’s Lay Ministry Awards. If members of your congregation are interested in ordering shirts with the diocesan ad (“What in the world are those Episcopalians doing now?”) on the back and the name of your parish, in addition to the diocesan shield, on the front, call Bob McKibben, 800-246-7099 or 954-565-4198 or 954-254-9890, for information on minimum orders, prices and other imprinted articles available.

News from Kenya—Fr. Todd McGregor wants everyone to know that contrary to some published reports, his “boss”, Archbishop Benjamin Nzimbi of the Province of Kenya, “has NO intentions of cutting off ties with ECUSA or with their present or future missionaries serving in Kenya”. Fr. McGregor says that although the Province of Kenya does not approve of the consecration of Gene Robinson as bishop coadjutor of New Hampshire, this disagreement with the Episcopal Church does not put his own ministry in Kenya in jeopardy. In fact, the ministry of the McGregors is more than ever in need of our financial support; contributions may be sent to the Diocese of Southeast Florida, marked for Todd and Patsy McGregor.

Clergy Retreat--The annual clergy retreat will be Feb. 9-12, at Our Lady of Florida, Lantana. The retreat leader will be the Rev. Julia Gatta, vicar of St. Paul’s, Windham, Conn. Dr. Gatta has been an instructor at Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, and is known as a spiritual director, retreat leader and award-winning preacher. Registration for the retreat is available on the diocesan website.

Men’s Retreat--The second annual Diocesan Men’s Retreat is scheduled for Feb. 27-29, at the Lake Placid Retreat Center in Lake Placid, Fl. The keynote speaker will be Assistant Bishop James Ottley. The cost for the weekend is $90, all-inclusive. Registration will be available on the diocesan website. For more information, contact Archdeacon Bryan Hobbs, dochobbs@diosef.org, or Linda Schlepp-Gray,  Linda@diosef.org, or call the Broward office of the diocese, 954-450-7247.

Start Up/Start Over—A Start Up/Start Over seminar in Spanish will be held Mar. 1-6, 2004, at the Duncan Center, and the next Start Up/Start Over seminar in English will be held April 26-30, 2004, at DaySpring Episcopal Conference Center in Ellenton, FL (near Sarasota). For registration and additional information, go to http://www.episcopalchurch.org/congdev/Development/StartUp/future.html

Benedictine Experience—In conjunction with the Friends of St. Benedict, the diocese will offer a Benedictine Experience at the Duncan Center, March 18-21, 2004, with the Rev. Lynn Ramshaw, formerly of this diocese, as the presenter. The cost for the weekend is $325, or $150 for commuters. For more information, call Patricia Wald, 954-752-4066.
