Exciting news travels fast, so perhaps you’ve already heard what Bishop Frade announced at the Clergy Conference: Beginning around the first of the year, the Rev. Dr. Bryan Hobbs and the Very Rev. Paul Rasmus will join the diocesan team as archdeacons, who will do much of their ministry traveling around the diocese. Fr. Hobbs will have responsibility for Congregational Ministries, assisting existing congregations with their growth and development, as well as working with the bishops and a congregational development team to plan for new congregations. He will continue to live in Broward County, where the diocese will eventually have a satellite office. Dean Rasmus will work with Clergy Deployment, seminarians and the process of preparing candidates for the ordained ministry. He will be based in a Palm Beach County satellite office, which is planned to open soon after he begins his new ministry.

Please note that both Fr. Hobbs and Dean Rasmus are still parish rectors, and will need to devote full attention to those ministries--and the transition process for their congregations--until their new ministries on the diocesan staff begin.

The bishop also told the clergy that Canon SuzeAnne Silla has announced that she plans to leave her position as Canon to the Ordinary, effective Dec. 31. She will be on sabbatical from mid-June through late September, and plans to use this time as a period of discernment of the future direction of her ministry.

Also included in this staff reorganization are new positions for diocesan Comptroller Cris Valdes, who will become Chief Operating Officer for the Diocesan Office, and Gail McShane, who will become Diocesan Coordinator. A new employee will soon take over many of Cris’ present duties in the accounting department.

Watch for additional information about these changes in our diocesan ministry team (including exact start dates for the two archdeacons) as plans are more fully developed over the next few months.

Norma’s absence—As many of you know, Bishop Said’s secretary, Norma Chisholm, has been ill for several weeks. Please keep her in your prayers; if you would like to send her a card c/o the Diocesan Office, we’ll see that she receives them. In Norma’s absence, Mary Sinisi has been assisting Bishop Said, as well as Bishop Frade; questions about parish search processes should be directed to Mary (ext. 20 or sinisi@diosef.org). Another of Norma’s tasks has been compiling the clergy anniversary list, so if we are missing any June dates, please email Mary Cox (episcorat@aol.com), and we’ll add them immediately.

Diocesan Journal - As we told you in May, publication of the Diocesan Journal has been delayed because the volunteer who compiled the information had a serious computer problem just as we were ready for final review of the material. We're now in the process of making the final edits to the document, and we anticipate having it to you-in print, on CD and (much of it) on the diocesan website-within the next month.

Confirmation Guidelines—New guidelines for a bishop’s visitations for confirmation have been sent to all parishes, and are also available on the diocesan website at www.diosef.org/faq/guidelines.htm.

Christian Educator Certification workshop—The Diocesan Commission on Christian Formation and Education is providing a workshop offering Christian educators tools to help students “catch” the faith, Aug. 23-24, at St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach. The Friday evening session is from 6-9 p.m., and the Saturday session is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Presenters will include members of the commission and other clergy and laypersons of the diocese. For complete information, contact Kokie Dinnan, (561) 731-2500 or childsjc@bellsouth.net, or Krisan Lamberti, (305) 858-5075 or moonlightk@aol.com.

Golf Tournament—Mark your calendar for the Convention Golf Tournament on Oct. 18 at International Links, 1802 NW 37 Ave., Miami. Tournament entries must be received by Jul. 15. For more information, contact Burnie Hughes at hughesbghughes@aol.com or (h) 305-232-2553 or (o)305-870-6013.

Updates—In order to keep our database current and accurate, please remember to give the Diocesan Office all changes of address, phone/fax/cellular numbers and email address for clergy and lay leaders. We intend soon to have a place on the website where you can submit these changes online, but meanwhile, call our receptionist, Jessy Cajina, or email her at jessy@diosef.org, with updated information.

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School grants—St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School is offering grants to enable employees of the Episcopal Church to send their children to the school at a substantially reduced tuition. The School will reduce the tuition by 40% for a boarding students who has a parent working full-time for an Episcopal institution. To be eligible for this grant, a student must complete the regular application process and be admitted. For more information, contact the SAS Office of Admissions, toll free 866-513-8290 or www.sasweb.org.

News needed—In future issues of The Net, we’d like to feature the ways in which parishes are working toward their own vision and mission, beginning with how parishes have been using the vision-mission-planning process to write (or revise) a parish vision statement. Please send your parish vision/mission statement to Mary Cox at the Diocesan Office, preferably by email at: EpiscoRat@aol.com.

EFM Mentor Training--is scheduled for Aug. 16-18, 2002 at the Duncan Center. Both Basic Mentor and Mentor Formation seminars will be offered. Trained Mentors are encouraged to sign up for a Formation event (must be eligible by having had two Mentor training events and be recommended by the trainer. ) If you're interested in joining or forming an Education for Ministry group, or becoming an EFM mentor, please contact diocesan EFM Coordinator Bill Thorstad at 561-392-3417, or by email at mjollnir5@aol.com. For additional information on EFM, go to: http://www.sewanee.edu/EFM/EFMhome.html.

Paintings, sculpture and ceramics will be on display in both the cathedral and the parish hall. The Festival will begin on Friday, June 14, with a private reception and viewing for invited guests. On Saturday, June 15, the event will open to the public. Most of the pieces at the juried show will be for sale, and will remain until after the 10 a.m. Eucharist on Sunday, June 16. Admission is free, parking is available both at the Cathedral and across the street in the Omni parking garage. For more information on the Arts Festival, contact the chair of Trinity's Communication Committee, Shirley Pardon, at (305) 758-5005, or email at parfaux@aol.com.

Bishop John Spong, retired bishop of Newark and frequently controversial writer and speaker, will be the guest of Integrity/Ft. Lauderdale at its regular meeting on June 15 at All Saints', Ft. Lauderdale. Spong's presentation will follow Choral Evensong at 6 p.m. After his presentation, the bishop will take questions from the audience. The program will be followed by a reception on the church lawn.

The Ultreya scheduled for Saturday, June 15, at St. James in the Hills, Hollywood, has been cancelled.

If you know of young people who might be interested in NROTC scholarships to the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, there are 120 four-year scholarships to be awarded by August of this year. These scholarships are no longer race-based--they’re open to everyone. Participating schools are Southern University, Morehouse College, Spellman University, Morris Brown University, Hampton University, Norfolk State University, Florida A&M University, Savannah State University and Prairie View A&M. Contact Robert C. Morris III, Major USMC, Special Assistant, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Personnel Programs, (703) 693-0237.

St. George’s, Riviera Beach, needs acolyte vestments, especially cottas. Contact Youth Minister Angela Acevedo, 561-625-4102, or by email at Angelama268@aol.com. (If you use email, be sure to put “acolyte vestments” in the subject line of your message.)

The Haitian congregation at St. John’s, Belle Glade needs choir vestments. If your parish has adults’ or children’s vestments you’re not using, please contact Fr. Sebastien Guillaume at (561) 254-5328. Fr. Guillaume is also interested in beginning computer classes for adults and young people; if you know of anyone who has computers to donate, he would appreciate hearing from you about that, too.

All Souls’, Miami Beach, is interested in renting its rectory, a 4-bedroom 3000 sq.ft. house adjacent to the church, while the parish pursues its search for a new rector. This would be a six-month rental at $1100 per month. The parish is also looking for a part-time sexton, 20 hours a week, minimum wage. Contact Bruce Thompson at 305-588-8899 for further information.

Church Finance Course -- St. Thomas University in Miami is offering a new course on Church Budget and Finance, as part of the Master of Science in Management (MSM) degree and certificate program. The course is designed for board members and other volunteers, professional staff, accountants and attorneys who work with religious organizations and other not-for-profit organizations. The program will focus on the following five areas: suitable fund-raising methods, budgeting process, accounting procedures, financial reporting techniques, investment possibilities, and specific computer software packages. Classes will be Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m. at Archbishop McCarthy High School, at 5451 South Flamingo Road. Cooper City, FL. The cost is $891 (which reflects a discount for degree-seeking students). If the individual would prefer to "audit" the course, the cost would be $495. For more information, please contact Prof. Nancy Borkowski at (305) 628-6506 or by email at nborkows@stu.edu.

Holy Trinity, West Palm Beach, will hold its annual July 4th "Fun-raiser" at the church, 211 Trinity Place from 5-9:30 p.m. The event features food, fireworks and a big-band concert. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12.
