JUNE  2 0 0 7

This month brings some staff changes in the Diocesan Office. Bishop James Ottley will leave the first week in June to take his new position in the Diocese of Long Island. Jackie Fernandez, who has been his secretary, will become secretary to Bishop Leo Frade, and Sally James, who has been Bishop Frade’s secretary, will move into a part-time position. She will be assisting Chief Operating Officer Cris Valdes, and will also assist Canon Fritz Bazin with a new ministry beginning in July.

Bishop Frade has asked Canon Bazin to take a part-time position in the Diocesan Office, dealing with immigration concerns, as well as other social justice issues. Canon Bazin will also continue his ministry as rector of St. Paul et les Martyrs d’Haiti, Miami; he and the parish will celebrate the 25th anniversary of their ministry to Miami’s Haitian community on June 16.

Hurricane readiness—We certainly should know the drill by now, but if you haven’t already completed your preparations for hurricane season, check the information at http://www.diosef.org/hurricane.html. Be sure the Diocesan Office has current contact information, not only for clergy, but also for the person designated as an emergency contact for the parish when the rector is on vacation.

Draft Anglican Covenant—A draft of an Anglican Covenant has been issued by a committee selected by the Archbishop of Canterbury. This document can be found—in English, Spanish and French—at http://www.aco.org/commission/d_covenant/downloads.cfm. A study guide for the draft covenant, also available in the three languages, is found at http://www.episcopalchurch.org/gc/. The Executive Council of The Episcopal Church is urging all baptized members to add their voices to the response to the covenant that our church has been asked to give to the Anglican Primates by September 30 of this year. A response from the majority of our diocesan Executive Board is posted at www.diosef.org, under “news and events”, “current postings”. If you would like to respond individually, a worksheet to guide you in preparing your response is at http://progressiveepiscopalians.org/html/sgworksheet.html, or you may also simply write your own response to the covenant and the questions in the Executive Council’s study guide. Responses can be emailed to gcsecretary@episcopalchurch.org, faxed to 212-972-9322 or mailed to Draft Anglican Covenant, The Office of the General Convention, The Episcopal Church Center, 815 Second Ave, New York, NY 10017. All responses must be submitted by June 4.

National Hunger Awareness Day—June 5 is National Hunger Awareness Day, an occasion to raise awareness of—and donations to help end—hunger in America. Churches are asked to hold food drives, volunteer at local food banks and include in worship on Sunday, June 3, prayers for the hungry and for the will to end hunger in our nation and the world. For resources go to http://www.hungerday.org/content/index.php
