            You’ll be noticing a couple of diocesan staff changes: First, our receptionist, Jessy Cajina, is on maternity leave; congratulations to Jessy and her husband, Guillermo Soria, on the birth of Christopher Anthony on Apr. 15! While Jessy is out, we’re fortunate to have Sally James, a member of St. Stephen’s, Miami, with broad work experience, as a welcoming presence at our front desk.

            As most of you already know, Bishop Frade announced in an Apr. 24 letter to diocesan clergy that that Fr. Reggie Payne-Wiens has resigned his position as Youth Missioner, effective Apr. 23. Appointment of a new Youth Missioner will be announced in the near future, and a dialogue and planning day for Youth Ministers and the Youth Commission is scheduled for May 10.

COPE Conference—All parish lay staff members, volunteers included, are invited to attend the annual COPE Conference at the Duncan Center, May 23-24. Registration begins at 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon, and the conference ends at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The conference chaplain will be Susan Beebe of Crossridge Church, whose book, Meditations for Church Staff, was published last fall. There will be practical information on such topics as using the diocesan database and how to publicize church events, as well as labyrinth walks and plenty of time for exchanging ideas and sharing stories of ministry in the parish office. Bishop Frade will be with the group for dinner and conversation on Friday evening. The cost is $60 for the full conference and $30 for one day only. Register at www.diosef.org/register. Diocesan Acolyte Festival--This year the host parish for the Diocesan Acolyte Festival is Historic St. Agnes, Miami. The event is set for May 31, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and will feature a procession with a marching band, workshops, lunch and some activities just for fun. Bishop Frade will celebrate the Eucharist, and Bishop Ottley will be the preacher. Register online at www.diosef.org/register.

Latino Youth Event--The Office of Hispanic Ministry of the Episcopal Church is sponsoring Breaking Down Walls, an event for Latino youth ages 14-18, June 25-29 at Berea College, Lexington, Ky. Each person, youth or adult chaperone, is asked to contribute a $50 registration fee and the cost of the transportation; the National Office will pay for lodging and food for all the participants. The deadline for submitting an application, with registration fee, is May 15. Application forms can be downloaded here (English, Spanish). For further information, please contact the Rev. Ramon I. Coverage K Workshops—St. Joseph’s, Boynton Beach, will host a Coverage K workshop on May 31; Adult Misconduct Prevention will be offered in the morning, beginning at 8:30 a.m., and Child Protection in the afternoon, beginning at 1:30 p.m. No lunch will be provided, and there is no cost for either workshop. Youth at General Convention—Youth ages 14-18 are invited to participate in a youth gathering, “Count Me Faithful”, at General Convention in Minneapolis, Minn., July 30-Aug.3. Florida Day at the National Cathedral—It’s time to begin making plans to participate in the quadrennial Florida Day at Washington National Cathedral, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003. The weekend will include a retreat on Friday, Sept. 19; tours of Cathedral and grounds on Saturday, Sept. 20; Holy Eucharist at 11 a.m. Sunday, with clergy and acolytes in procession, and reception following; evensong at 4 p.m. Sunday; Healing Service at 6:30 p.m. We would like all congregations in the diocese to be represented; begin by contacting Joanna Wragg or Gail McShane at the Diocesan Office with the name of a volunteer coordinator from your parish for this event. Episcopal Relief  & Development—Episcopal Relief and Development (formerly the Presiding Bishop’s Fund for World Relief) has asked that we develop a network of people who can bring news of its work regularly to all congregations. Each rector or priest/deacon-in-charge of a parish is asked to appoint a representative who can assist in talking to the congregation monthly and encouraging donations to ER & D. This network of representatives would also be in place to help coordinate our response in times of emergencies. "Jesus for Every Generation"--The Duncan Center will present a seminar June 9-11 led by Rev. Carl Eeman, author of Generations of Faith, on ministry with different generations. Net AwardsAt this year's Episcopal Communicators' conference, The Net received three awards: an Award of Excellence (first place) for Shelley Barre's interview with Archdeacon Paul Rasmus when he was rector of St. Paul's, Key West (April 2002); and Awards of Merit (second place) for Layout and Design Editor Dan Clifford's layout of the youth page in the August 2002 issue, and for photography in the entire December 2002 issue. In the past four years, diocesan publications have received a total of 19 Polly Bond Awards.

F.Y.I.—Information from our Parishes and Around the Church

On Sunday, May 4, at 4 p.m., Trinity Cathedral, Miami, will sponsor the cathedral a recital by organist Frederick James Kent, assisted by bass Jim Carlton (yes, that Jim Carlton—staff accountant in the Diocesan Office!); freewill donations will benefit the cathedral’s organ fund.

Holy Trinity, West Palm Beach, will hold its “Grand Yard Sale” on May 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Furniture, appliances, art, books, games and toys, sports equipment, tools and boutique clothing are among the variety of merchandise that will be available. Proceeds will go toward needed improvements in the parish’s facilities and equipment. There will be a “Gala Preview Evening” from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, May 9, for members of any congregation in the diocese; this event will feature music, refreshments and a silent auction. On May 18, Dr. R. William Franklin, Scholar-in-Residence for the Episcopal Diocese of New York, will give two presentations about the Episcopal Church's response to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. This response included the relief efforts at St. Paul's Chapel at Ground Zero, clergy volunteers in the morgue, and the outpouring of support from across the church. Dr. Franklin will preach and give a presentation at the 10 a.m. service at St. Stephen's, Coconut Grove (Miami), and will give a second presentation at Trinity Cathedral at 4 p.m. A lively and engaging speaker, Dr. Franklin has previously served as Dean of Berkeley Divinity School at Yale, Professor of Church History at the General Theological Seminary, and as a member of the ARCIC Anglican-Roman Catholic dialogue. His new book, Will the Dust Praise You?, chronicles the Episcopal Church's ministry in the aftermath of 9/11.

The Chapel of St. Andrew is sponsoring a cocktail reception from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, May 30, at the home of Dean and Valerie Fulton, 8750 NW 68 Ct., Parkland, to benefit Five Talents International, an Anglican initiative that is committed to combating poverty in the developing world through micro-enterprise development. The evening will offer an opportunity to meet Five Talents Executive Director Craig Cole and his family and learn more about this ministry. The cost is $20 per person. Trinity Cathedral presents  "Art at the Cathedral 2003", Saturday, May 31, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Come and see a free exhibition of local artists’ work--painting, photography, sculpture, lithographs and much more.

St. Thomas, Coral Gables, parish choir, along with the choirs of St. Stephen’s, Coconut Grove (Miami) and Trinity Cathedral will present a concert featuring J. S. Bach’s Magnificat  and other works on May 31 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. An Interfaith Community Symposium and Dialogue, "Work, Dignity, and Faith: Finding Common Values Amidst Diversity", will be held Monday, June 16, 2003 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Central Baptist Church in downtown Miami. A free, public event sponsored by the United States Conference of Religions for Peace (USCRP) in conjunction with the South Florida Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, "Work, Dignity, and Faith" will include keynote addresses by Dr. Ron J. Sider, Founder and President of Evangelicals for Social Action, and Imam Mujahid Ramadan, a founding member of the Las Vegas Interfaith Council for Worker Justice and nationally known diversity expert. Concurrent workshops lead by national and local experts will discuss how can the clergy, congregational leaders and staff and leaders of faith-based organizations respond to the challenges of working poverty and the tensions of diversity. The College of Preachers in Washington, DC, has announced a program called The Reconciliation Project, to train teams of leaders, lay or clergy, for the ministry of reconciliation, focusing on specific local needs. Some opportunities to pray for peace

As Bishop Frade has requested, all parishes are incorporating special prayers and/or times of silence for peace into regularly scheduled services. In addition, here are some extra opportunities to pray for the leaders of our nation and the world, for those serving in the military, for all those suffering or endangered in the conflict in Iraq, and for peace. Please email Mary Cox at episcorat@aol.com, or call her at the Diocesan Office if you have other opportunities for prayer to add to this list.

Good Shepherd, Tequesta

  • Weekly candlelight prayers for peace on Sundays at 7:00 p.m. Bring a candle and meet in the courtyard behind the church for music, quiet times and prayer. The labyrinth will be open after prayers, for those who wish to walk.

    St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton

  • Church open Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. for private prayer for peace

All Saints’, Ft. Lauderdale

  • Prayer service for peace, each Wednesday, 5:30 p.m.

All Souls’, Miami Beach

  • A Prayer Banner hangs in the church, and anyone may write a prayer on a paper cross provided and pin it to the banner. These are private prayers and will not be read aloud.

St. Columba, Marathon

  • Monday mornings from 7:30 to 8 a.m., a prayer vigil is kept in the Prayer Garden adjacent to the church.
