Thanks to the Diocese of Maine for giving us space to post our updates after Hurricane Wilma knocked out internet access for both our web host and our webmaster!

We regret the delay in posting this issue of Grapevine, but we’re sure everyone understands why.

Many of last month’s plans to help victims of Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast have been temporarily postponed while we assess the damage from Wilma in our own diocese. The diocesan Disaster Response Task Force will be meeting later this month to continue our plans to help in the various places—including our own parishes and communities—affected by this year’s storms, and to develop a diocesan plan for response to any future hurricane or other catastrophic event in our own area.

Click on the Hurricane Response link on the front page of the website for updates on the situation here after Wilma, as well as information related to the Episcopal Church’s response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Before Wilma struck, our diocese had collected more than $100,000 in donations to help the dioceses affected by the previous storms and these funds will be disbursed as intended. Now donations to assist victims of Hurricane Wilma can also be made by clicking on “donations” at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org, or through Episcopal Relief and Development, http://www.er-d.org/

If your parish is in need of help—or has help to offer—contact Linda Schlepp-Gray in the Broward office of the diocese, Linda@diosef.org or 954-450-7247.

Peer Ministry Training—will be offered for students Mar. 10-12, 2006, at DaySpring Camp and Conference Center in Ellenton, Fla.  For adults, the training will be part of the Youth Ministers Retrreat and Training weekend April 21-23 at the Duncan Center. PLSE--The PLSE ("pulse") program is an interdenominational effort with the dual purpose of nurturing young persons who want to explore a possible call to vocational church leadership, and developing a mentoring-guiding-shepherding process that encourages and lifts up those who explore or discern a call. PLSE maintains an interactive website, www.theplse.org, for young persons exploring a call to ministry and the people (including congregations) who support them. Diocesan youth ministry encourages high school and college students to visit the site and sign up online to become part of the conversation. Young persons who enroll in the site earn the title “PLSE Leader”—a good addition to college and job applications.

Labyrinth programs with Lauren Artress—The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas, the organization that has reintroduced the labyrinth and walking meditation as spiritual tools, will be in residence at the Duncan Center for a series of labyrinth-related programs May 26-30, 2006. In addition to leading a labyrinth retreat May 26 and 27, Artress will offer a day with clergy, spiritual directors and retreat leaders on May 28 and labyrinth facilitator training May 29-30.
