We're thankful that the damage from Hurricane Jeanne in Palm Beach and Martin Counties was not as devastating as we'd feared for our churches and their parishioners! However, there was severe damage on Hutchinson Island, and the Marriott, where we had planned to hold the Diocesan Convention, will not be able to reopen in October. Convention will be held Oct. 16 only, at Bethesda-by-the-Sea, Palm Beach, hosted by St. Mary's, Stuart, and Bethesda. More information will be provided in a few days.

We have added to our website, www.diosef.org, a “hurricane update” link on the front page that will take you do information on storm damage in our diocese and others, how to help with hurricane recovery and where to find assistance.

If you plan to send a team to help with hurricane recovery either in our diocese or elsewhere, it’s important to contact Linda Schlepp-Gray, 954-45-7247, email Linda@diosef.org, or Doug Drouin, Doug Drouin, 561-488.5702 or (cell) 561-866-1978, email missionworks2020@bellsouth.net or doug@diosef.org. For safety guidelines for disaster relief work and updates on what’s needed, go to “News and events”, “current postings” on the diocesan website. You can make donations online, or by sending a check marked “hurricane relief” to: Diocese of Southeast Florida, 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132. If you do not specify a particular place or storm, your donation will go where most needed.

Dicocesan Convention — Deadlines have now passed for resolutions and nominations, which will be posted on the website under “current postings”, “Diocesan Convention” prior to the convention. Delegates, please remember to bring with you the convocation packets that were mailed to you.

Assessment Payment Report--Click here to view or print the report of parish assessment payments through Aug. 31 of this year.

Group Life Insurance—Parishes will soon be receiving materials from Church Life for open enrollment for group life coverage with an effective date of January 1, 2005. All eligible employees who have not yet been enrolled with group life can enroll without health statements. Employees who were previously denied will also be able to enroll at this time

Clergy Appreciation Month—October is Clergy Appreciation Month. Although we appreciate our ordained leaders all year, this is a time for individuals and congregations to take time for special recognition of clergy and their families for their and faithful ministry among us. This October, after our eventful September, we owe our clergy special thanks for their pastoral work in a time of great stress. For suggestions on how to honor the clergy, go to http://www.family.org/pastor/cam/

Hispanic Heritage Celebration—The annual diocesan Hispanic Heritage Celebration will be held Sunday, Oct. 24, 3-7 p.m., at Trinity Cathedral. This will be an opportunity for Hispanic Episcopalians from many countries to share with each other and with the whole diocesan family their various customs, cultures, music—and food.

Anti-Racism Workshop--The Diocesan Commission on Diversity, with the assistance of the National Anti-Racism Committee of the Episcopal Church, will provide an anti-racism workshop for clergy and lay leaders and diocesan staff on Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Cathedral, Miami. This is the first workshop to offer this training, which will be required for clergy, diocesan staff and members of the Executive Board and Standing Committee, and urged for as many people as possible throughout the diocese.

Bishop’s Lay Ministry Awards—The second annual Bishop’s Awards for Lay Ministry will be presented Nov. 20. Each congregation is asked to choose one person it wishes to honor for outstanding ministry in the parish; this might be someone who has served faithfully for many years, or a relatively new parishioner who’s jumped right into a leadership role. Names of those to be honored, with a short description of the person’s ministry, must be submitted to Bishop Frade’s secretary, Sally James, by email or mail no later than Oct. 18.

Journey to Adulthood Training--Diocesan Youth Ministry will sponsor leader training for Journey to Adulthood, Dec. 10-11 at St. Stephen's, Coconut Grove (Miami). Advanced training will be offered Dec. 10 and a basic training Dec.11. More information will be sent to youth ministers as soon as it is available.

“Planning for Tomorrow”—The Church Pension Fund has scheduled a "Planning for Tomorrow" conference for clergy in our diocese (place TBA) March 11-12, 2005. Please mark your calendars for this opportunity to develop life and financial planning skills. For information about the content of Planning for Tomorrow conferences, go to http://www.cpg.org/cms/content/580_generic.cfm

Missions—The diocesan Missions webpage, www.diosef.org/missions, offers information on planned short-term missions and mission training events in the diocese. If you have a mission trip planned for next year or would like assistance with planning a short-term mission, contact Diocesan Missions Coordinator Doug Drouin, doug@diosef.org or 561-866-1978.

Supply clergy—Our current list of supply clergy is very short. Any priests who are interested in doing supply work and have not been called recently (or at all) should contact Jackie Fernandez, 800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 26, or email Jackie@diosef.org.

Kujawa-Holbrook, sherylkujawa1@msn.com, no later than March 1, 2005. Complete panel proposals should provide information on all panel participants.

Benefit Cruise for Our Little Roses—Bishop Frade hopes you will mark your calendars now for a 10-day cruise to the southern Caribbean, visiting Curacao, Aruba and Costa Rica and cruising through the Panama Canal, beginning Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2005. The proceeds will benefit Our Little Roses Home for Abandoned, Abused and Orphaned Girls in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.
