October 18: Due to the forecast track of Hurricane Wilma, Diocesan Convention has been postponed. As soon as a new date is set, information will be posted.

How is the church like a TV “reality” show? We’ll soon see--“Extreme Makeover: God’s Edition” will be the theme of the Diocesan Convention, Oct. 21-22 at St. Gregory’s, Boca Raton.

Some convention deadlines have already come and gone, but please note these: Nominations must be submitted by Oct. 3 (these go to the Secretary of Convention, Fr. Bernard Griffith, Christ Episcopal Church, PO Box 330006, Miami, FL 33133); material to be included in convention packets must be in the Diocesan Office by Oct. 12, and the deadline for convention registration is also Oct. 12.  Online registration is available at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org/register.html. For hotel reservations at Embassy Suites, Boca Raton, call 1-800-EMBASSY, and say that you are attending the Diocese of Southeast Florida Convention; the special room rate is not guaranteed after Oct. 7.

Childcare for children ages 4-12 will be available at St. Gregory’s during the convention sessions both Friday and Saturday, as well as during the Eucharist. A donation of $10 is requested, and registration is necessary; the deadline is Oct. 14. To register, call Reta at St. Greory’s, 561-395-8285 or email stgreg@bellsouth.net. Childcare for the banquet is available through Alexandra’s Sitting Service (licensed and bonded), 561-702-1011; the deadline is Oct. 5. To reserve an exhibit table please email your request, prior to October 12, 2005, to Walter Stuart, wstuartvgr@bellsouth.net

New web address—The diocesan website can now be accessed through a new web address, which we are using in our advertising campaign: www.episcopalsouthflorida.org. For the foreseeable future, you will still find our site at www.diosef.org, but we think the new address will be easier to remember, especially when we are telling seekers how to find us.

Hurricane response—As of Sept. 28, parishioners in the diocese had donated more than $25,000 to the diocesan fund for hurricane relief, in addition to funds given to Episcopal Relief and Development and a variety of in-kind donations. A diocesan Disaster Relief Task Force has been formed, with a two-fold purpose: To coordinate our diocesan response to both immediate and long-term needs of the people of the churches and communities affected by this season’s hurricanes; and to develop a diocesan plan for response to any future hurricane or other catastrophic event in our own area.

The Episcopal Church nationally is coordinating disaster relief through a new church-wide system, a four-phase response called “We Will Stand With You”, under the direction of the Bishop Suffragan for Chaplaincies, George Packard. Our diocesan Task Force has contacted Bishop Packard’s office, to make sure that the resources we offer will be used where they are best suited and most needed. News and updates on needs, resources and how to help are available from Episcopal News Service at a webpage called HELP (Hurricane Emergency Links Portal) http://www.episcopalchurch.org/help and our Task Force will also be posting updates at the Hurricane Response link on the front page of our website.

In cooperation with the Red Cross, the Duncan Center is offering a three-hour Introduction to Disaster Mental Health Training on Nov. 10 and Red Cross CPR and AED (defibrillator) training on Nov. 11. Contact the Duncan Center, 561-496-4130, for details.

Continue to give—all funds donated to the diocese for hurricane relief will go directly to hurricane-related needs, as identified through Bishop Packard’s office and the dioceses in those areas. Donations can be made by clicking on “donations” at www.epsicopalsouthflorida.org, or through Episcopal Relief and Development, http://www.er-d.org/

Above all, continue to pray for the victims of the storms, for those who are working to help them recover, and in Bishop Frade’s words, “pray also for guidance and generous hearts in our efforts to help”.

Planned Rebuilding Mission to Mississippi--All Saints, Ft. Lauderdale, has "adopted" Christ Church in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi as they face the daunting and also deeply hopeful challenge of rebuilding their facilities from the ground up. On Nov. 6-12, All Saints, together with 14 other parishes from across the country, will be traveling for a rebuilding mission in Bay St. Louis. The group will stay in the gymnasium of Coastal Episcopal School and help with offloading supplies coming into the community, actual rebuilding efforts, cooking, etc. The group is also accepting supplies to take with them; for a list of needed items, go to http://www.allsaintsfl.org/hurricane.htm. Others are welcome to join this trip—there is lodging for up to 150. All Saints is extending an invitation to anyone interested in joining this mission to attend a meeting on October 20th at 6:00 PM in the Parish House of All Saints (333 Tarpon Drive, Ft. Lauderdale, FL). If you have any questions, please contact the team leader of this effort, Russell Phelps at phelpsrussell@yahoo.com

Ad Campaign—The national Episcopal television ad targeted specifically at “GenX” persons (early 20s-early 40s) ran the weekend of Aug. 27-28 on a number of networks, and again in September. After a couple weeks of hurricane-related delays, our diocesan advertising campaign is now in place. The national ad and its audio and print versions are running as public service announcements on local radio and television and in hometown newspapers throughout the diocese, from Key West up through Martin County. We have also posted the ad in 43 bus shelters throughout the diocese. If you haven’t seen the ad on TV, you can see it online at www.episcopalchurch.org/adcollaborative; click on “Monitors”, in either English or Spanish. Please encourage friends you would like to invite to church to view it, too—it might be a good conversation-starter! The cost of our diocesan advertising will be between $15,000 and $20,000, so Bishop Frade has asked for donations toward this expense, which is far beyond the scope of the Communications Ministry budget. Donate online by clicking on "donations” on our website, www.diosef.org. Of course you can also mail a check payable to the Diocese of Southeast Florida, marked for "diocesan ad campaign", to: Diocese of Southeast Florida, 525 NE 15 St., Miami, FL  33132.

"Safeguarding God’s Children" training—Three “Safeguarding God’s Children” classes will be offered this month: Oct. 1, 9 a.m.-noon, St. Stephen’s, Miami—contact Fr. Drew Bunting, dbunting@sseds.org or 305-448-2601; Oct. 29, 9 a.m.-noon, Church of the Transfiguration, Opa-locka, 305-681-1660; and in French, Oct. 15, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at St. Christopher’s, Ft. Lauderdale--contact Fr. Frantz Casseus, fcasseus@gbronline.com, or 305-305-769-4783. If your parish or school is offering a training session that will be open to those outside the parish, or if you want to schedule a training, please contact Gail McShane, gail@diosef.org. All clergy officiating in this diocese, either canonically resident or licensed to officiate, must be certified as having completed this training by Dec. 31 of this year.

Human Needs Grants for 2006—Parish outreach and Jubilee ministries may submit applications for Human Needs Grants from the 2006 diocesan budget beginning Friday, Oct.7. The deadline for submitting applications (and reports on the use of funds from 2004 grants) is Nov. 18; no applications will be considered after that date. To download application forms and guidelines, click here, or contact the convener of Human Needs ministry, Fr. Rev. Winston Wright, 561-845-6060 or wrightwright@aol.com.

Review of employee benefits--A review of the benefits package offered to clergy and lay staff serving in the diocese will be held at Bethesda-by-the-Sea on Monday, Oct. 31, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm. Anti-Racism Training—The location of the Anti-Racism Training workshop for Nov. 5 has been changed from St. Paul’s, Delray Beach, Delray Beach, to St. Stephen’s, Coconut Grove (Miami), co-hosted by Christ Church. The workshop is from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The cost is $10, which includes a continental breakfast, lunch and all workshop materials. Registration is online at www.episcopalsouthflorida.org/register.html. This training, which was mandated by General Convention for all clergy and lay leaders, was first offered in this diocese last November for diocesan staff, Executive Board and Standing Committee. The Commission intends to make these training workshops ongoing throughout the diocese and to involve as many people as possible. An additional workshop is scheduled for Feb. 4, 2006, location and details to be announced.

Bishop’s Lay Ministry Awards--The third annual Bishop’s Awards for Lay Ministry will be presented at an 11 a.m. service Nov. 19 at St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields, Pompano Beach. Each congregation has been asked to choose one person it wishes to honor for outstanding ministry in the parish. Names of those to be honored, with a short description of the person’s ministry, must be submitted to Bishop Leo Frade’s secretary, Sally James, by email or mail no later than Nov. 1.

Duncan Center update—The Duncan Center has recently updated its website, www.duncancenter.org, with more information on programs and facilities. The Center would like its site to be linked to the websites of all parishes in the diocese—and to have all parish websites listed in its links. The Center is also asking for a person to be appointed in each parish to act as a Duncan Center liaison, to be sure parishioners know about programs and opportunities for spiritual development offered by the Center. Upcoming programs include: An Introduction to Benedictine Prayer, Nov. 4-6; “Parents as Coaches” classes, Oct. 16-29 and Nov. 13; and “ ‘Do-Gooders’ Who Changed the World”, Nov. 1-3, 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., lunch included. For information on being a parish liaison, linking with the website or for the details of any Duncan Center program, contact Program Director Veneta Lorraine, at 561-496-4130 or vlorraine@adlephia.net

Labyrinth programs with Lauren Artress—The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, founder of Veriditas, the organization that has reintroduced the labyrinth and walking meditation as spiritual tools, will be in residence at the Duncan Center for a series of labyrinth-related programs May 26-30, 2006. In addition to leading a labyrinth retreat May 26 and 27, Artress will offer a day with clergy, spiritual directors and retreat leaders on May 28 and labyrinth facilitator training May 29-30.

Staff positions open at Duncan Center—The Duncan Center needs to fill the following positions: Conference Coordinator (full time); Assistant Conference Coordinator (full time/part time); Bookkeeper/Accounting (part time 10 hours/per week); Housekeeper/ Kitchen Assistant (full time/part time);Grounds Keeper (part time 12 hours/week); On-Call Chef (part time). Call Fr. Steve Fregeau or Veneta Lorraine at 561-496-4130, or email safregeau@aol.com for information.

Movie preview--The Barna organization is beginning a series of quarterly movie preview nights for groups of 50 or more. The first of these will be an advance screening on Dec. 8 of Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media's production of the classic C.S. Lewis Story, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. Seating in selected theaters will be on a first-come, first-served basis, so you will need to reserve tickets soon if you plan to take a group from your parish. For information and to request tickets, go to www.barnapreview.com.

Missions—The registration deadline for the Dec. 23-Jan. 10 mission to Kenya has been extended to Oct. 1. Contact Cheryl Harman, cmh103@aol.com for information about the trip and an Oct. 22 fund-raiser for Todd and Patsy McGregor’s ministries in Kenya. Holy Comforter, Miami, is planning a mission to their sister congregation, Holy Trinity, in Puerto Cabezas, Nicaragua, Jan. 16-26, 2006. They are inviting others to join their team or to offer financial support for the mission. Details are at www.diosef.org/missions/HolyComfortermissionFlyer2005.pdf

PLSE--The PLSE ("pulse") program is an interdenominational effort with the dual purpose of nurturing young persons who want to explore a possible call to vocational church leadership, and developing a mentoring-guiding-shepherding process that encourages and lifts up those who explore or discern a call. PLSE maintains an interactive website, www.theplse.org, for young persons exploring a call to ministry and the people (including congregations) who support them. Diocesan youth ministry encourages high school and college students to visit the site and sign up online to become part of the conversation. Young persons who enroll in the site earn the title “PLSE Leader”—a good addition to college and job applications.

Ecumenical Youth Event—“Faith in 3-D”, an event for youth in grades 6-12 co-sponsored by the Episcopal Church, the Presbyterian Church USA and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, will be held at Disney World, Jan. 13-16, 2006.  Faith in 3-D will explore what we have in common as Christians and how we celebrate our differences. There will also be time to participate in the Disney Youth Education Series, in which young people can experience life.
