         We hope everyone’s returned from vacation rested and full of energy, because it looks like a busy and exciting fall. Diocesan Convention--Remember, all resolutions to be presented at Convention must be received by Canon Kerry Robb (gkrobb@stmarkspbg.org) by Sept. 3; nominations are due Oct. 4. Presiding Bishop's Visit--Mark your calendars now for the visit of Presiding Bishop Frank Griswold to our diocese next January 25! Bishop Griswold will be at St. Paul's, Key West, for that congregation's 170th observance of its patronal festival--a celebration for the whole diocese of 170 years of Episcopal presence in South Florida. Plan to spend the day-or the weekend; information on accommodations in Key West can be found at www.keywest.com. Remember that January is the height of the "season", so you'll need to make your reservations early.

Celebration of the McGregors’ ministryThe Chapel of St. Andrew will hold a service and dinner Sept. 8, 4-7 p.m., in celebration of the ministry of Fr. Todd McGregor and his family in Madagascar. The McGregors are on furlough in Florida for the next few months before beginning a new ministry in Kenya. For more information on the celebration for the McGregors, call the Chapel, 561-483-8044.

Clergy Spouse Wellness Day—All clergy spouses have received a mailing about the Clergy Spouse Wellness Day, Sept. 21 at the Duncan Center. The day will include workshops on Centering Prayer, Emotional Quotient and Laughter, but these are optional; the focus of the day is fun, worship and fellowship together. The cost is $25. Parish Communicators’ Workshop— A workshop for parish communicators is scheduled for Oct. 12, 9:30 a.m. to noon, at St. Thomas, Coral Gables. Presented by the team that led our successful first workshop at St. Joseph’s in May, the morning will offer strategies and techniques for public relations and internal communications, and information on developing a parish website—plus time to exchange ideas with others who are working in this ministry. Computer class for clergy--The diocesan Electronic Communications Committee is offering a "Basic Computer Class" for any interested clergy on Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the Southwest Broward Regional Library (directions will be made available). The class will cover the basics of email and the Internet, and if time permits, some information on Microsoft Word. Space is limited to 25 participants, so reservations are on a first-come/first-served basis. Email Communications Convener Fr. Bryan Hobbs at dochobbs@holysacrament.org now to reserve your space.

Prayer Vigil—As in the past, the Anglican Fellowship of Prayer is sponsoring a yearlong prayer vigil for General Convention 2003. Each diocese in the Episcopal Church is invited to take responsibility for three separate days of prayer during the year; the days assigned to our diocese are Sept. 13, 2002, Jan. 5, 2003, and May 3, 2003. Multicultural Orientation—The South Florida Center for Theological Studies is sponsoring its seventh annual Multicultural Orientation, Sept. 30-Oct. 4, for clergy, church staff and lay leaders who want to learn more about the diverse cultures of South Florida. Advent images wanted—The magazine Anglican World is looking for articles, images, photos and post cards that in some way relate to saints associated with the Advent season (the Blessed Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, St. John the Baptist, St. Nicholas, St. Lucy) and also to a particular Anglican or Episcopal church or institution. The deadline is September 29. Photos and other art must be high-resolution. F.Y.I.—Information from our Parishes and Around the Church

The Youth Group/Acolyte Guild of Trinity Cathedral, Miami, will hold a car wash Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the cathedral parking lot (across from the Marriott on 14th St.), to raise funds so that as many of the young people as possible can attend the National Acolyte Festival in October at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. While your car is washed, you will be able to visit the Cathedral Bookstore or take a tour of the cathedral. The youth will also have sodas and snacks for sale.

St. Andrews’, Lake Worth, will begin its new Christian Education program with a multigenerational Sunday on Sept. 8. The sermon at the 10 a.m. service will be a drama based on the story of Ruth, presented by actress Gabby Offenbach. An ice-cream social will follow the service. Trinity Cathedral, Miami, will be the site of a "No to Discrimination" candlelight vigil on Sept. 9, the evening before the referendum on the proposed repeal of the current Miami-Dade Human Rights Ordinance. There will be a pre-vigil press conference from 6-6:30 p.m., followed by the candlelight vigil in the cathedral. At 7:45, participants will form a procession spelling out the word "NO".

In conjunction with the Music Teachers Association of Florida, Trinity will present a recital by Trinity’s organist, Dr. William Hopper, on Saturday, September 14, 2 p.m., at the cathedral, 464 NE 16 St., Miami. A reception follows the concert. Tickets are $10, and are available from the cathedral office, 305-374-3372.

The Historic St. Agnes, Miami, will hold it's eighth annual revival the evenings of Sept. 11, 12 and 13, at 7:30 p.m. The preacher will be Assistant Bishop James Ottley.

Holy Sacrament, Pembroke Pines, will present a “Walk Through the Bible” seminar focusing on the Old Testament on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9-4 p.m. “Walk Thru the Old Testament” uses a mix of hand signs, catch phrases, group reviews and entertaining interactions with the instructor to help people grasp the major people, places, events and timeline of the Old Testament. St. Patrick’s, West Palm Beach, will hold its second International Food Fest on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 4-7 p.m.  Home-cooked meals from various cultures will be available for take-out, but diners in the church’s parish hall will enjoy live steel band music with their dinners. A donation of $20.00 covers a choice of two meats, two vegetables, one starch, bread and a dessert. Call (561) 833-1903 for information and tickets.

On Oct. 19, Artistic Photos will be at St. Margaret’s, Miami Lakes, to take informal family portraits. For a donation of $19.95 (part of the proceeds go to the church), a family will receive a free 10” x 13” portrait and a $19.95 credit toward any additional package of portraits purchased. Meditations for Church Staff, a book by Susan Beebe, a recent graduate of Yale Divinity School, will be released by Morehouse Publishing on Oct. 1. Contemplative Outreach of South Florida will offer a Centering Prayer Introductory Workshop at

Fr. Ramón Aymerich will lead a 12-day pilgrimage to Turkey, Feb. 17-28, 2003. The pilgrimage will visit "The Seven Churches of Revelation"--the churches founded by St. Paul--as well as ancient Ephesus, Cappadocia, the Frozen Waterfalls of  Pamukkale and Istanbul. The cost, which includes roundtrip airfare from Miami, hotels, breakfast and dinner daily, tour guide and bus, is only $1,683. Trinity Cathedral, Miami—Holy Eucharist at 12:05 PM, open to all of the neighborhood in addition to members of Trinity; participating with the National Conference for Community and Justice and community leadership for a 3.2 mile "Walk as One" hike through downtown Miami, beginning at 6 p.m. at the Bayfront Park Amphitheater, and ending back at the amphitheater at 7 p.m. for a multicultural and multifaith remembrance ceremony.

Resurrection, Biscayne Park-- Candlelight vigil service, using the "Litany of

Remembrance, Penitence and Hope" from the National Council of Churches, at 7 p.m. in the church parking lot. Civic officials and churches from surrounding neighborhoods have been invited.

St. Bernard de Clairvaux, North Miami Beach—Services at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Holy Family, Miami—Prayer service at 6 a.m.; the congregation is invited to fasting and prayer all day, for our nation and leaders, and to pray with at least one other person, other than a member of the congregation. At 10:30 a.m. the rector will lead prayers for the staff of Air Jamaica at their main offices in Miami.


South Dade

St. Thomas, Miami--Full Choral Requiem Mass at 7 p.m. on 9/11 and similar service on Sunday, 9/15

St. Stephen’s, Miami--"An Interfaith Candlelight Vesper Service Honoring the Memory of September 11, 2001" at 7 p.m.; will begin ringing church bells at 8:48 a.m. with one peal for each victim throughout the day; the focus of the regularly scheduled morning day school mass and noon day mass/healing rite will be the one year anniversary.

Holy Comforter, Miami--Service of Healing and Holy Communion at 6 p.m.

St. Andrew's, Miami—Choral Holy Eucharist at 7:30 p.m., followed by
a time for conversation and refreshments in Schofield Hall.

St. Simon's, Miami—Memorial service at 7:30 p.m. in which members from our Spanish and English speaking congregations will be sharing their perspectives on how we have been affected and what God has done. 

St. Philip’s, Coral Gables—Healing service at 7:30 p.m. with prayers for peace among nations and for peace in Jerusalem; the school’s 8:30 a.m. weekly service will honor local police and firefighters.


Keys

St. James the Fisherman, Islamorada—Remembrance/memorial service of Holy Eucharist at 7 p.m.

St. Paul’s, Key West—Performance of Brahms’ Requiem by the Keys Community Chorale at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the concert will benefit the Police and Fire Departments of Key West. Bells will toll at 9a.m. and at noon on 9/11.

St. Francis-in-the-Keys, Big Pine Key--Evening Prayer, 6:30 p.m; community service at Vineyard Christian Fellowship at 7:30 p.m.
