Bishop
Frade’s days with the clergy—The Clergy Days scheduled for
Jan. 17 and Mar. 21 are the first in an ongoing series of opportunities
for clergy to meet informally for conversation with Bishop Frade.
Clergy Days will be scheduled in each deanery, but any diocesan
clergy may attend any of the events. Reservations are required
so that lunch can be provided; if you plan to attend the Jan.
17 Clergy Day, call diocesan registrar Estela Terrero,
800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext.17, no later than Jan. 10.
COPE—Parish
secretaries and administrators, please mark your calendars for
the COPE (parish lay staff) conference, Jan. 15-16. You’ll be
receiving your invitation and registration form in the next few
days.
New
database—Bear with us: The new database designed for the Diocesan
Office by Bill Evans is up and running, but our information
is still incomplete, and we know there are still some errors.
If you receive mail from the office with an error on the label,
please let us know, so we can make needed changes. Rectors and
parish secretaries, remember that we need to have the most current
information for your staff members and parish officers; committee
chairs, we also need to have you and your members in our database.
(Download the form
for faxing information changes to the Diocesan Office.)
Email—Recently
we’ve had several viruses and worms infect the computer network
in the Diocesan Office through email attachments, and our computer
consultants have warned us not to open email messages with addresses
or subjects we don’t recognize. Please make the subject line in
your email messages as specific as possible, so we won’t delete
messages we need to receive. And please keep your own anti-virus
software up to date, and don’t open messages you don’t
recognize; we want to keep all of our computers running! Note:
Please add Bishop James Ottley to your email address
book; his email address is: jottley@aol.com.
Church
Signs—One of the important ways we make our churches welcoming
to visitors is by making them easy to find. The new Episcopal
Church signs—the ones like the sample we displayed at Diocesan
Convention—are now available from Episcopal Parish Services at
800-903-5544 or www.episcopalparishservices.org/signs.asp.
Extra
copies--of many back issues of Grapevine (2001) and
The Net (1999-2001) are taking up more space than we have
at the Diocesan Office. If you’re missing an issue in your files,
or would like extra copies of a particular one, call Mary Cox,
800-268-9993 or 305-373-0881, ext. 18, or email EpiscoRat@aol.com
by Jan. 15, before the papers go to the recycling bin.
Bishop’s
Discretionary Fund—If you’re wondering what’s become of Bishop
Frade’s annual letter requesting support for his Discretionary
Fund, it has encountered several delays at the printer. You should
receive it within the next few days; it’s not too late to include
in your year-end giving a donation for this fund, which enables
our bishop to respond to urgent personal needs among the clergy
and laypersons of the diocese, to assist seminarians and to enable
special ministry opportunities.
Holy
Week Clergy Day—Yes, we’re still in the season of Christmas,
but Easter 2002 will be early (Mar. 31), so Bishop Frade would
like all clergy to know that the guest speaker for the Holy Week
Clergy Day and Blessing of the Oils, Mar. 26, will be the Rev.
Lloyd A. ("Tony") Lewis, professor of New Testament
at Virginia Theological Seminary. Mark your calendars for that
date.
The
Rev. Todd McGregor--and his family will be on furlough in
Florida from their mission work in Madagascar from August 20-December
20 of this year. Any parish that would like to have the McGregors
visit during that time to talk about their ministry should contact
the Chapel of St. Andrew, (561) 483-8044, for further information
and scheduling.
