The
Union of Black Episcopalians
Theodore Gibson Chapter
|
The
Union
of Black Episcopalians, the UBE, exists to serve as an instrument
to eradicate, eliminate and neutralize racism as a causative agent
of "dividedness" within the Episcopal Church. The UBE exists
to reform the practices, policies, procedures and systems that
impede effective participation of Black Episcopalians in the total
church processes.
Our
chapter, the Theodore R. Gibson Chapter of the Union of Black
Episcopalians, held its first organizational meeting January 1979
at the Church of the Transfiguration. Interested persons from
Black congregations in Dade and Broward counties were encouraged
by the late Canon Theodore R. Gibson to meet and organize a local
UBE chapter.
In
the first few years, participation in chapter activities started
slowly, but a faithful following of members has evolved and sustained
the ongoing efforts of our Chapter. Most of the predominantly
Black congregations are represented in the membership.
Two
of the stalwart members who provided outstanding leadership and
service are the late C. Stanley Newbold and William J. Stirrup.
The Reverend Richard Marquess Barry has
served as advisor to the Chapter for a number of years and continues
to provide spiritual direction.
Chapter
meetings are held on the third Monday of each month at local churches
in the Miami Dade County area on a rotating basis. Meetings begin
promptly at 6:30 PM.
